THE BASICS Roulette is a game of chance involving placed bets on a ball. A roulette table is marked with the various bets, including a series of numbers, 1 through 36, plus 0 and 00. The numbers on the table correspond to numbers on the wheel. The wheel is spun, and then a ball is spun around the wheel. Eventually the ball will slow down enough to drop into the spinning section of the wheel, and will drop into one of the numbered slots. Where that ball drops determines what bets win and what bets lose.
One thing of note, along with numbers, the table has either red or black colors. The various numbers have colors associated with them, red or black, although not all odds are red, nor are all evens black. All the Bets are as Follows:
1 Number – 35 to 1 Odds
2 Numbers – 17 to 1 Odds
3 Numbers – 11 to 1 Odds
4 Numbers – 8 to 1 Odds
5 Numbers – 6 to 1 Odds
6 Numbers – 5 to 1 Odds
12 Numbers – 2 to 1 Odds
18 Numbers – 1 to 1 Odds
18 NUMBER BETS There are the very general bets of red, black, even, odd, first 18 and last 18. Each of these bets covers 18 numbers on the board. Betting red means that if a red number comes up, then the bet wins. Betting the first 18 means that if a number from 1 through 18 comes up, that bet wins. If any of these bets win, you get back 1 to 1 for your bet, meaning that if you have “100” down on black and black comes up, then you get your bet back, plus another “100” chip.
12 NUMBER BETS There are six 12 number bets. These allow you to bet the first 12 (1 through 12), second 12 (13 through 24), or third 12 (25 through 36), or the three vertical columns of the table (the numbers on the table are aligned into 3 columns, making 12 rows total—one such column would be 1, 4, 7, 10, etc.). These are 2 to 1 bets, meaning that if you have “100” down on the first 12 and a number in the first 12 comes up, then you get your bet back, plus another “200” in chips.
OTHER BETS Beyond that, you may place chips on numbers or small groups of numbers. Roulette is very flexible about allowing for all kinds of bets, although the more numbers that are bet on by a single bet, the less you win if a number that is covered is hit.
Betting on one number is just as it sounds. One bet is placed on a single number, such as the number 1. If that number comes up, the payout is 35 to 1 for it.
Betting on two numbers is a simple matter of putting the bet on the line between the two numbers. If either of the two numbers covered come up, the payout is 17 to 1.
Betting on three numbers simply requires you to put your bet on the edge line of a particular row. If any of the three numbers covered come up, the payout is 11 to 1.
Betting on four numbers simply requires you to put your bet on the center corner of four numbers. If any of the four numbers covered come up, the payout is 8 to 1.
There is only one five number bet. It covers 0, 00, 1, 2, and 3. To bet these five, you would put the bet on the intersection of 0, 00, and 2. If any of the five numbers covered come up, the payout is 6 to 1.
And finally betting on six numbers simply requires you to put your bet on the corner of two rows. If any of the six numbers covered come up, the payout is 5 to 1.
